Any time you make a major change to your disk, you can put your data at risk. The key is to minimize this danger as much as possible.

A good first step is to choose Acronis Disk Director Suite to handle your disk partitioning needs. This is one of the most advanced disk partitioning software packages on the market and is designed to partition disks with the minimum possibility of data loss or corruption.

The next step is to make sure you have a current, full backup before you begin disk partitioning operations. We recommend that you create an exact image of your hard disk. Should a problem occur, you can restore the image and be back to a known, working state. Acronis^® True Image Home 2009 can create images of the entire disk on removable media such as CD-ROMs, on another hard disk in your system or on a networked drive. It can even create an image on a hidden partition that would not be touched when you change your other partitions.

Acronis Disk Director Suite makes it extremely unlikely that something will go wrong while you are performing partitioning operations, but if it does, the problem may affect the entire physical disk. For this reason you cannot trust Windows' Restore Points to be able to restore lost or corrupted data.

Make sure your backup includes a Rescue disk in the event the operating system cannot boot. Acronis True Image includes the Acronis Recovery Manager, a small program that runs before Windows tries to boot. If your system becomes corrupted and you have an image in the Acronis Secure Zone, you can boot using an Acronis rescue disk or with the Acronis Recovery Manager to access the good image in the Acronis Secure Zone.

Now, test your disk to make sure it doesn't contain any file system's errors such as lost file chains, cycles within the folders structure, or other problems. Acronis Disk Director Suite provides an easy way to do with this. From the Disk Director main screen, select disk and then check. Or just click Check the selected partition for errors from the toolbar.

While you are creating, moving, or copying partitions do not run programs such as anti-virus software or backup tools that use low-level disk functions. It is safe to continue to work with programs that don't bypass the operating system to get to the disk.

A good plan is to use the "copy" feature in Acronis Disk Director Suite to move the information to the new partition and keep the original until you are sure the new partition is functioning properly.
